CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers come out of their bye week with their best four-game record in five seasons. And at 2-2, the Panthers stand alone at the top of NFC South division race with four weeks until the annual NFL trade deadline on Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET.
With the Panthers sitting in an unprecedented position under the current front office, Carolina is in an interesting spot when it comes to consideration of midseason reinforcements. While several notable names -- including starting right tackle Taylor Moton (blood clot), starting defensive end Tershawn Wharton (neck) and top returner Trevor Etienne (ankle) -- are expected to make their 2026 debuts in short order, the Panthers could use improved depth at a few positions with injuries piling up. That's where the trade deadline could come into play, and Carolina is inarguably better positioned to add players than in years past, especially if the team finds a good fit on the market.

Panthers general manager Dan Morgan has been methodical about parting with draft capital for incoming players during his tenure, which began in 2024. In fact, his first straight-up trade involving an outgoing pick for an incoming player -- without a player or pick swap -- happened less than two months ago, when Morgan traded a 2028 sixth-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers in late-August for defensive lineman TeRah Edwards, who played in each of the Panthers' first four games before their Week 5 bye.
The Edwards trade, while a minor deal, shows Morgan isn't going to be stubborn with his draft assets if it means he can upgrade a roster primed for a potential repeat division championship.
Panthers coach Dave Canales said he and Morgan speak about potential roster moves "all the time."
"I won't get into specific positions or anything like that, but Dan has done a great job of trying to look for opportunities that may present themselves to us to be able to challenge our roster in the right way," Canales said Tuesday. "We're always open, we're always looking. I'll pop into his office right after this meeting for about 15 or 20 minutes. And we may be watching [saying], 'Hey, let's take a look at this guy.' We may be watching a college player as he's starting to gather his evaluations, but always having those conversations, to be ready for what could be."
While the Panthers have momentum coming off a Week 4 win against the Detroit Lions and quite a few talented players who are getting healthy, adding external talent could help push the team beyond the standard they set last season with an 8-9 playoff berth.
Let's break down the ins and outs of the Panthers' outlook with less than four weeks before the trade deadline and ahead of their game Sunday at the Philadelphia Eagles (1 p.m. ET, CBS):
Will Panthers general manager Dan Morgan make a big move ahead of the NFL's trade deadline on Nov. 10? Jim Dedmon/Imagn Images Roster needs for Panthers entering Week 6 Carolina's injuries have established positional demands across the depth chart, even with several players eligible to return from injury prior to Nov. 10:
Cornerback: Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) are on injured reserve. They were replaced by rookie Will Lee III and special teams ace Akayleb Evans against the Lions in Week 4. And while Lee held his own, Evans was picked on relentlessly by Detroit quarterback Jared Goff to the tune of 12 completions for 208 yards and a touchdown on 16 throws.
The Panthers could use an additional veteran presence with Horn and Jackson sidelined.
Running back: The Panthers don't want to overload starting running back Chuba Hubbard, but he has already touched the ball 71 times in the first four weeks of the season. While that workload has been beneficial to the offense (390 total yards and five touchdowns), the Panthers have postseason aspirations and don't want to hinder Hubbard's late-season production on the way there.
Etienne will return from an ankle injury this week, but he hasn't proven himself offensively in the NFL. And the early returns on AJ Dillon haven't been particularly glowing (46 yards on 19 total touches) as he has filled in for Jonathon Brooks, who is on injured reserve after undergoing core muscle surgery. A consistent pass-catching option out of the backfield would benefit the rotation. Maybe Etienne can become that option, and he'll have a decent runway to prove himself before the trade deadline.
Defensive line: The Panthers plan to have Wharton back in the lineup shortly. However, while they've benefited from second-round pick Lee Hunter's play, the Panthers' run defense has left a lot to be desired. Entering Week 5, Carolina ranks last in rushing yards allowed per carry (5.4) and 31st in rushing yards allowed per game (156.5).
While those numbers are largely skewed by the Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears, the unit has only held one rushing offense below 132 yards in four games. Wharton isn't known as a run defender and likely won't solve this issue. Nose tackle Cam Jackson (shoulder) was also placed on season-ending IR on Tuesday, so Morgan might need to look to add externally again.
Panthers' draft capital for 2027 and 2028
The Panthers have eight draft picks coming their way in 2027, including an additional seventh-round pick (from the offseason trade of Andy Dalton to the Philadelphia Eagles) and a second fourth-round pick, which was upgraded from a fifth-round pick in a pick swap (with the Minnesota Vikings in the 2025 Adam Thielen trade).

2027 draft inventory:

In 2028, the Panthers have six picks following the sixth-round swap for Edwards in August. All six are the Panthers' original picks.
State of Panthers' salary cap
While the Panthers have an encouraging record, quality draft capital and clear needs at relatively attainable positions, their salary cap constraints could hold them back ahead of the deadline. According to the NFLPA, the Panthers have just $2.32 million in cap space (which ranks as second worst in the league behind the Los Angeles Rams with $1.78 million in space) as of Wednesday.
The team has the ability to open up cap space with contract restructures, but that might not be the most sound strategy, even with the team looking to win now. While trading a future draft pick is one thing, pushing cap charges into the future, along with trading away that capital, might be hard to stomach for an organization that has largely balanced those scales under Morgan and executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis.
The team could also look into releasing or waiving an underperforming player for salary cap space. That avenue would probably be the most likely strategy, as a cut player would also open up a spot for an acquired trade piece.
Four games loom large for Carolina
The next four weeks will play a big factor into the Panthers' approach at the deadline. The team faces the Eagles (2-3) on Sunday and then has matchups against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-4) at home and the Green Bay Packers (3-2) on the road before hosting the Denver Broncos (3-2) in the final matchup before the deadline. If the Panthers are still hovering around.500, they'll have reason to pounce on a potential trade. They could also decide to make a move well before the deadline, as the Baltimore Ravens did with center Cam Jurgens and the Houston Texans did with wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. in the past week.
Given the Panthers' salary cap situation, though, their outlook on trades might be more about rentals toward the end of their rookie contracts or veterans with low-base salaries rather than the grandiose long-term splashes. A blockbuster trade probably isn't in the cards, but if the Panthers can take advantage of a potential fire sale or a misfit with a relatively new regime (such as Houston with Harrison), then an upgrade or flyer, at least in the short term, could certainly be plausible, especially if the organization only needs to fork over a late-Day 3 pick in the potential swap.
