PARIS -- For two sets Friday afternoon, it seemed as if Novak Djokovic was well on his way to the familiar confines of the second week at Roland Garros.
He had taken a 6-4, 6-4 lead against 19-year-old rising Brazilian superstar Joao Fonseca on Philippe-Chatrier and had done his best to ignore the blistering heat and relentlessly bright sunshine, as well as the lively crowd packed with yellow-and-green jerseys and flags.
While other top seeds, such as No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 5 seed Ben Shelton, had been handed shockingly early exits, it appeared as if the path for Djokovic, 39, to finally win his record-setting 25th major title was getting increasingly clear.
